About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Lisbon at R. Almeida e Sousa 32, Az de Comer is a vibrant culinary gem that beautifully marries the rich traditions of Portuguese cuisine with the warmth of a neighborhood cafe and wine bar. This charming spot offers an inviting atmosphere where both locals and visitors can savor authentic Portuguese flavors in a setting that feels like a cozy corner deli rather than a bustling restaurant.

Az de Comer is truly a celebration of Portugal’s diverse gastronomic heritage. The menu highlights an exquisite array of pastries and savory dishes that delight the senses. A must-try is their legendary Pastel de Nata—those perfectly crisp, caramelized custard tarts with a delicate flaky shell that crackle under each bite, releasing a warm, creamy sweetness. For something a bit more adventurous, sample the Queijadas de Évora (locally known in Lisbon as Queijada de Requeijão), a soft, subtly tangy cheese tart that delivers layers of gooey richness contrasted with lightly caramelized tops. Not to be missed is also the Broa de Mel, a honey-infused corn bread that exudes an earthy sweetness and crumbly texture that lingers delightfully on the palate.

The culinary experience at Az de Comer extends well beyond sweets. As you settle into their numerous cozy seating options—perfect for lingering over a leisurely breakfast or a casual light lunch—you can enjoy exceptional seafood and vegetarian dishes prepared with thoughtful care and authentic Portuguese flair. The menu's variety embraces the classic and the contemporary, bringing fresh, locally sourced ingredients to every dish.

Guests frequently praise the warm hospitality and genuine smiles of the staff. Despite some occasional language barriers, the team’s patience and eagerness to accommodate create a truly reassuring environment. One customer, Ronald Fisher, highlighted the attentive service and the honest tips on payment methods, reminding visitors that the venue accepts cash but not all foreign cards, helping you prepare and avoid surprises.

Life at Az de Comer pulses with the lively buzz of satisfied locals and travelers alike, crafting a palpable sense of community. The authentic crowds add to the charm—there’s something special about sharing this little culinary corner with passionate food lovers, all eager to savor traditional queijadas and freshly baked treats over a glass of carefully selected wine or craft beer from their well-curated offerings.

Whether you’re a pastry enthusiast, a lover of Portuguese seafood, or someone longing for an atmosphere that’s as welcoming as it is flavorful, Az de Comer stands out as more than just a restaurant. It’s a place to connect with the heart of Lisbon through its culinary stories, where every bite serves as a warm invitation to experience the loving craftsmanship behind each dish.

Very good pastries and fast accommodating service. Had a bit of a language barrier, but they were patient with me. They do not take AMEX or foreign multibanc cards so bring cash.
